Scary Stuff

Posted in randomosity at 12:00 am by coldclimate

Accourdig to New Scientist, THE US military wants to buy large quantities of anthrax, now there is a scary prospect, and I suspect, an illegal one.

An abuse of power?

Posted in randomosity at 12:00 am by coldclimate

Surely this is exactly why we should be wary of the new laws: “After being ejected Mr Wolfgang’s pass was seized and he was detained under the Terrorism Act when he tried to re-enter the conference on Wednesday.”. Exactly what was the act of terrorism then? Speaking out about the current administration? Fucking bastards.

Enchanted rocks and late night films

Posted in randomosity at 12:00 am by coldclimate

The Texan adventure continues, but I thought I’d drop a very quick note about dodgeit.com which allows you one-shot email. Magic.

OK - so Monday, we were tired and irritable and exhausted from jumping about all over the place. Judging by the photos I looked a mess :) So wwe floated round the fabulous Barton Springs and did absolutely shag all.

Tuesday we roadtripped down to San Antonio, which is allegedy “every texasn’t favorite city” (I suspect this isn’t true), though it is a lovely little place. I also ticked another box on my Preacher tour - The Alamo (forget the history - this is comic books we’re talking here).

Wednesday we roadtripped again through Fredricksburg (the classic small southern town) and I feasted on chilli (not bad) and cornbread (greatstuff) before powering our way up Enchanted Rock. I have never been as hot in my life! It’s like walking on the surface of the moon - a huge expance of granite. I suspect the moon is colder. Then at midnight we headed to The Alamo cinema to Wierd Wednesday, where they play a film, and it’s free, becuase its terrible. LAst night was Teen Lust, which was less exciting that you might imagine, through tremendous fun.

Today is Redneck Fun Day Part I. We’re off to the guns range for Full Auto Thursday, and then tracking off to “The Cliffs” were we jump off rocking into the water, carrying beer. Genius.

Tomorrw is Redneck Fun Day Part II - tubing. I shall report back in.

And the greatest band name ever is….

A lesson learnt

Posted in randomosity at 12:00 am by coldclimate

When learning to dive from a springy diving board, use causion. Don’t attempt full and a half summi’s until you learn how to land bad ones. I now have two amazing black eyes. I landed a couple of good ones, over turned, didn’t break out, and face planted moving very quickly.

I look like I said “George Bush is a dick” in a redneck bar.

Three days of ACL

Posted in randomosity at 12:00 am by coldclimate

Well kids, I survived three days of Austin City Limits, and amazing it was too. It’s possibly the best organised festival I’ve ever been to - every band came on on time (and most left on time), without exception! The traffic was light and easy - especially as there were near 200,000 people there too.

So, the line up:
Day 1 - Friday:
Bobby Bare Jr - better than expected.
Asleep At The Wheel - fabulous redneck fun!
Kasabian - rocked - they are brilliant.
Mates of State - quirky duo, quite fun, not amazing.
Nic Armstrong and the Theifs - amazing. Definatly the best band of the day.
Thievery Corporation - I’ve wanted to see them live for years, and they were as good as expected.
Blue October - NuMetal boys, quite good fun though not as describes (”these Smiths obsessed Texas” - foolish untruths.)
The Black Crowes - America’s anser to the Rolling Stones aparently - only a bit crap.

Day 2 - Saturday:
South Austin Jug Ban - yet more great redneck fun - they’re be so much fun at a party
Aqualung - diet coldplay but better than that sounds
Buddy Guy - A legend in these parts - I have to admit I was impressed
Death Cab for Cutie - were brilliant
Bloc Party - I’m not their biggest fan, but they were incredible live. The stomped, shouted, bounced and screamed, and it was fantastic.
Oasis - I was 40 miles back, and they started really badly, but they got so much better. Noel’s wierd comments about “I hate you, bring me some anthrax - system of a doom!” didn’t really go down too well. However he redeamed himself with a story about huge bugs in his bedroom.

(Went out - ended up playing pool volleyball until 4am - this weather is amazing once the sun goes down)

Day 3 - Sunday (very tired):
The New Amsterdams - members of the Get Up Kids reform to produce a much better band!
Eisley - girls singing and playing guitars, and saying thank you a lot. Better than that sounds.
Doves - were fantastic, and they were almost wearing huge coats, well-full length shirts anyay.
Kaiser Chiefs - Were on form, and full blown rock. The man who got in the way of all my photos turned out to be the lead singer of franz Ferdinand, except I always waited to get him out of the way, and so I don’t have any photos. Arse.
The Arcade Fire - we were quite fan back, but they were quite fun. We left early to get a good place at …
The Decemberists - who were fun, and brilliant! They played hard, got the whole audience to sit down (much have been about 10k people). The strangest thing is their violinist look just like theGirl, so much so I didn’t just do a doubletake but checked about 40 times. However, theGirl doesn’t smoke, cant play the violin (to the best of my knowledge), and isn’t from Portland. Still - the resembalence was amazing.
The Black Keys - we got the barrier - then my camera batteries ran out (managed to change them whilst still jumping up and down). I’d not heard them before, but for a duo they do make a lot of noise - and good noise too.
Coldplay - we were on the horizon, and knackered beyond belief. They were as expected, though they do jump around more that you’d expect.

Today - we are going to do bugger all.

Texas - hot and friendly

Posted in randomosity at 12:00 am by coldclimate

Well, I’ve been here a couple of days, I have to admit, I’m kinda takn with Texas. It’s hot - fucking hot - considering there was the first frost in newcastle as I left, Texas is increadibly hot. ACL first day was amazing. I saw a whole swaith of people (full report later when I have lists and photos infront of me), ate some great food (yay for falafel!) oh and watermellon - which is terrible qwatery cottonwool else where, is great in really hot countries.
I was also interviewed for local Channel8 TV. I was nervous, stutting, sunburnt and was on my way to buy a hat. I managed to get them to not film me buying a hat :)

Right - off for day 2. The count so far, 380 photos, 2 set lists, 1 hat.

Escaping one rita, to find another

Posted in randomosity at 12:00 am by coldclimate

Thats right kids - I’m managed to go on holiday into the path of a hurricane! Oh for god sakes, you escape one RITA, only to find another.

Spending the day battening down the hatchs, and nailing everything down, we should be fine, but this might be a rocky road…

Love to all

this day in history

Posted in randomosity at 12:00 am by coldclimate

After a fifeteen hour day at work, I held the scarf she made me to my face, and breathed in deep, searching for that last trace of her perfume in leu of the hug I so badly needed, but all I found was the demp smell of the last wet day.

Then it made me sneeze and feel stupid.

Ah coffee, brother, mother and secret lover, where would I be without you?

Lamb

Posted in randomosity at 12:00 am by coldclimate

God i love Lamb. Not just the meat (and creature), but Lamb’s Between darkness and wonder, is just brilliant. Angelica rocks my world. I ran across some photos of theGirl, and got a bit grumpy and contemptative, but throw in a bit of that tune, and the world makes more sense.

Right - I’m off to bed, I’ve spent all day being crap and hungover, and not really achievd a lot, so tomorrow I must right emails, read about texas, make plans, and be producive. And have a lie in.

Not me.

Yay for hunting!

Posted in randomosity at 12:00 am by coldclimate

So we can’t hunt with dogs huh? I can still shoot though - and some creative farmers are buying birds of prey! Fuck the twattish backbench fools who pushed this through, and the rest of the Blair mob.
