Timeoff from work

Posted in randomosity at 12:00 am by coldclimate

Well, its a month to the day that I came back form Texas, and God do I feel like I need a holiday. I have very little truck with peoplewho won’t knuckle down and work hard, the whining little turds, but work is beasting me at the moment, and when I think I’ve got some time off, more work comes along. I’ve taken a couple of days holidat to come down and see my cousins, and try and sort out a website for their charity.

Anyway -since arrviving I’ve been presented with a series of computers to fix, been expected to share my hard earned mp3 colleciton for nix, planned and basecoded a faily heafty sized website, mediatd warring parties in the family, and had 2 asthma attacks due to the fucking dogs. I need some time off damn it!

Saturday night held a fabuolous party however, with all the right ingredients. Georgous house (tick), booze and fod galour (tick), very pretty Irish lady (tick), slightly bonkers but not unattractive lady (tick), fireworks (tick), freedom to modify fireworks and let them off under unsafe conditions (tick), like minded pryotechnic nutball (tick), drunken rampaging (tick), dance dance revolusion mat (tick), vomitting (tick), sleeping badly (tick), hangover (tick) and a day feeling grumpy and put upon (tick). Perfection.

Shame I didn’t get contact details for the bonkers one, or the irish lady.

Genius reading

Posted in randomosity at 12:00 am by coldclimate

call centre confidencial” is a great little site. Wel, I say little, its been writen for over two years, which is pretty impressive. I found it form john egdell’s site. Then as I was reading it, I ran across a bit about SADlights. Funnily I’d been thinking of buying one - party because I getup in the dark, go to bed in the dark and worker under fouro lights, ubt the genius of the phase ” whats wrongwith telly, a stella and a bag of chrisps” brought me back down to earth.

Fucking IE

Posted in randomosity at 12:00 am by coldclimate

Well itsa very long time since i used a completely “vanilla” comuter - one stright off the shelf of dixons and plugged into theinternet. Im staying with my cousin for a few days, and after 5 years of managed pc’s (uni waslocked down, work worse s,and all my personal machines are macs/linux/locked down windows) you forge how painful it is to sit down at a machine littered with spyware, IE, a milion and one popup etc etc etc.

Im downloading them firefox. They will thankme eventually. I’m half tempted to book off my knoppix disk in my rucksack (always carry one - you never know when a good *nix environment might be handy)

Unix and windows

Posted in randomosity at 12:00 am by coldclimate

I’m not the biggest fan of windows at the best of times, but after my current gripes about Mac (iTunes=rubbish, iPhoto = bollcosk) I’m not sure what to work in. However this article about how Windows programming API’s force styles was very interesting.

John Egdell

Posted in randomosity at 12:00 am by coldclimate

I am not talented enough to have to words to describe John Egdell’s songs. I’ve seen him live a few times, and he;s generally wonderful. I mobbed him the first time I saw him (supporting Maximo Park upstairs at the Cumberland Arms I think) when he was very drunk and I was being a smug git.

Little did I know that I would find myself reading the lyrics on the inside of his first cd (fresh from amazon). Go. Buy. See. Hear. And tell somebody else, but not too many people because it’s our secret. honest.

Geek satisfaction

Posted in randomosity at 12:00 am by coldclimate

Ah yes - a hard days geeking, followed by a hard days geeking :)
Finally got my linux laptop connected to a portable harddrive, and then connected to my stereo and the network. All good. But then I got xmms-shell running so I can ssh onto it and control the Stereo Lappy from my iBook. Strike two.

Then O rocks up with the new wireless router - so now I can wireless onto the network, connect to Stereo Lappy and control the stereo from anywhere in the house! Geektastic.

Next - capturing streaming radio via linux, so I can start to archive radio4 (for personal use only obviously!)….

Sunday AM + werk = terror

Posted in randomosity at 12:00 am by coldclimate

4 pints of “heritage” cider = a tenner.
1 very cheap tequila = a pound
Sitting in work on a sunday at 7am, feeling like shit, eating cold semosa and very cold water, priceless. Pricelessly shit.

Speaking of fish

Posted in randomosity at 12:00 am by coldclimate

and in the time it took to recount all that, I burned my fish soup, meaning I’m now reading the news/email backlog, eating smoken haddock soup, with slightly burned lumps in it.

Strangly good though

Jesus Wasn’t Made of Fish

Posted in randomosity at 12:00 am by coldclimate

This morning I was woken up a bit early by a phonecall about databases. Having dealt with that (by promising to wander intowork about 10 to restart a server) and I dozed until my alarm went off, set speacially for the John Peel Home Truths special. Strange things happen in that time where you’re not quite awake, so asleep. This morning I remembered it is about two and a half years since [story removed to protect the innocent, and the not so innocent]

Anyway - I always meant to ring Home Truths and tell John about it, I somehow thought he would have seen the humour in the situation, but I ever got round to it, and then a year ago, I lost my chance, and the UK lost one of its greatest assets.

I loved Home Truths. I still do, but I miss John Peel massively. Its still good, but it just not quite the same. It was lovely to have an insight into the ravenscroft family though, the member of which I have hearded banded around for years. There will never be another John Peel, but then to quote the man himself “i like to hear something I’ve not heard before”.

The quote in the subject is from John’s wife, about why you eat fish on fridays. It was the working title for his book which she finished, I’m not sure it thats the name it was published under. I’m despiratly seach out his quote, which I shan’t ruin here by getting badly wrong, about ungements and pleasuring his wife.

Worrying rush

Posted in randomosity at 12:00 am by coldclimate

Shitty day at work, and I stagger home, put some food in the oven, and pur myself the end of my stoli from the freezer, topping it with apple and cranberry and putting away 2 inches in one go. 2 minutes later I can actually feel the headrush.

Suddently i understand how people end up alcoholics.

So much to tell, it’s been a busy week

Posted in randomosity at 12:00 am by coldclimate

I’ve not been this busy in ages. What a rollercoaster of a week. So here goes

friday

At the end of a shitty shitty week, i wrote my resignation letter and sent it saying it would be considered official if things didnt change. Finally got home at some rediculously late hour, and slept.

saturday

Woken up by ringing photo, my boss convices me to stay.I go to work at 7am, have a monsterously shitty day and many calls both national, international, and very very stroppy.

sunday

More work. Same story.

monday

Big bang email, laying down the law. Shookwaves throughout. I have a great (if long) day explaining things to people. Then we go out to see Lake Me and Chippwa falls at the head of steam in town. Top stuff

tueaday

Werk werk werk werk werk. dinner bought by my boss. minimal sleep

wednbesday

werk werk werk werk werk werk werk.

thursday

wer werk werk werk werk, followed by bands at Agora for John Peel Day - see the photo Irritatingly I got no good photos of John egdell, or the man who spoke so beutifully about john peel, or the host, or the group we got talking to.

friday

werk with hangover. Left late and eventually got the the opening night of the Carling Academy newcastle. Took a bunch of mates who mostly didnt know anybody else there but me, and a manager from work, who was scared by punks and gays and fun people. Amazing night, with Futureheads headlining, Fieldmusic and Kubichek supporting. So tired when i got home, so long since id mosh pitted that hard.

saturday

Up at 7am to go to work. Tired and crappy. Had to leave at 9:30am to abseil down the baltic. managed not to die. Slammed back to work in a taxi, managed some code, held a meeting and finally got home. Stright out the door to a goldfrap gig (Alison Goldfrapp is a bit like Kate Bush, only a bit more pixie, a bit more kinky, a lot my NYC). They were, urm, isolated. Impressive stagecraft though.

today

Woke up at 7am to somebody asking me questions about databases. Explained i wasnt working today. Woke up again at 9 to take my slow roast pork out of the oven. Nods to blogjam and FHW for that one. Been swimmiing, sorted out a load of photos, not done too muuch really. Forgotten to do my washing, despite not having socks for the morning. Off out to Black Rebel Motorcycle Club in about an hour.

Ah - the life and times of a busy boy. So Things To Do This Week:

  • sort out the rest of the texas photos
  • catch up on email
  • find an iTunes > RSS plugin
  • find my room under the sea of shit
  • wikipediafy the blog
