`big news in music land

Posted in randomosity at 12:00 am by coldclimate

stolen from myspace:
Members of New Order, Stone Roses and The Smiths search for vocalist
Freebass - a supergroup consisting of New Order’s Peter Hook, The Smiths’ Andy Rourke and The Stone Roses Mani - are on the lookout for a singer.

The band are looking to complete their line-up with a fresh face.

“We want someone young with something to say. Someone new,” Peter Hook told filer-mag.com.

“I think the problem is that the three of us have such a pedigree of vocalist, that if we come out with someone that’s not good we’ll obviously be slated! You’ve got Ian Brown, bloody Bobby Gillespie, Ian Curtis, Bernard (Sumner) and Morrissey. Those are big shoes to fill, especially collectively,” he said.

Hooky described Freebass’ sound as “(sounding)like New Order with a bit of the Stone Roses and a bit of Smiths and some Northern Soul.”

The star went on say the songs the supergroup have been working on contained all three bassists playing together.

“Mani does the low part, Andy Rourke in the middle and I do the high bit. But it works out quite well,” he said.

The rise of Google

Posted in randomosity at 12:00 am by coldclimate

Well, lets hope google keeps going. They’re getting big, and the cash is flowing, which is always a bad sign to me (cynic that i am - remember Winamp?) but lets hope that this continues: Several current and former insiders say there’s a caste system, in which business types are second-class citizens to Google’s valued code jockeys.

Hurray for code jockeys! Boo to management consultants!

Independant: teen drinking horror!

Posted in randomosity at 12:00 am by coldclimate

Bloody hell - I used to really enjoy The Independant. It was a great paper, but just lately (in the last few months) it has become distinctly pro Lib Dem, and even worse, has stared making silly judgement. For example, this mornings cover is a piece about “Teen Britain:The Shocking Truth”. Yes, as a generation, we’re a bit fucked up (hell- and I’m not even a teenager any more) but …

“Almost half of teenagers have tried alcohol”. yes - a statement I can believe, but surely there is a difference between “trying alcohol” and “getting battered on a regular basis”.

“36% of teenager have tried cocaine or cannabis”. Cocaine OR cannabis - because theres a sensible combination. Hash is everywhere - you can smell it in the streets most weekdays if you open your nose, but cocaine? I live and work in a section of society which can aford it and where is not unacceptable, and I see it very rarely. I wonder which way the 36% splits? 30% and 6% maybe?

“32% of 15 year olds have had sex”. Yes, it’s a year below the age of consent- and 10% said they felt pressured into it by peers, but for God sakes people a hundred years ago the phrase “old enough to bleed, old enough to breed” (put roughly) was common place in numerous rural areas.

“19% of teenage girls have self harmed” and possibly more worrying “they only do it to draw attension to themselves”. Yes, of course its to draw attension to themsleves. Cutting is symtom not a cause. Its something that some people do (right through they’re lives), and has simalar feelings of release as crying, running, screaming and make-up-sex. Yes, I don’t think it’s a good thing (I’ve seen self harming where people have cut down to the bone, or held lighters against themselves until their flesh actually smolders), but it doesn’t mean its something you should stop. Really - treat the cause, not the symtom.

remember Aung San Suu Kyi

Posted in randomosity at 12:00 am by coldclimate

Once again Aung San Suu Kyi has been placed under house arrest. How is this happening? When the world can recognise somebody with the Nobel Peace Prize, and yet let this continue?

Grrr I say - Grr!

Someboy elses media solution

Posted in randomosity at 12:00 am by coldclimate

So, after weeks of hacking my own into existence, I discover Jinzora which looks like a very neat media solution. Encoding, streaming, video and tunes, this looks like it kicks ass.

But I wrote mine, and like all proud fathers, will look past my little ones flaws. Apache+php+xmms+xmms-shell+usb mounted media+samba for sharing = proud daddy.

Made up words in The Simpsons

Posted in randomosity at 12:00 am by coldclimate

I love The Simpsons. It’s possbly one of the few bits of TV i actually miss (I try not to watch TV - it’s bad for the brain :) ) but it’s scary how many of Made up words in The Simpsons are faintly familiar.

Active morning

Posted in randomosity at 12:00 am by coldclimate

In my attempts to be productive this morning I’ve managed to

  • Not managed to mount by NSLU2 drive’s disk so I can’t hack it
  • Not consolidate my music collection using cvs
  • Not get noxmms installed becuase of a pain in the ass error about glib-config
  • Not tidy up the flat
  • Bend a spoon digging out honey from the jar

Bloody marvelous.

Back to the fox

Posted in randomosity at 12:00 am by coldclimate

Well, after my month long trial of Camino, I’m back to firefox. Camino’s good. It’s shiny, and neater, but it has some really annoying habbits (apple-click down’t put you into a new tab, text boxes are agonisingly slow to type in etc etc), so it’s back to firefox for me. Never like IE, not convinced by Safari (though its pretty good), but the fox is the browser for me I think.

Freedom and liberty

Posted in randomosity at 12:00 am by coldclimate

For Gods sake people - can you start thinking about what’s happening in our contry at the moment as a very minimum. Better yet, start shouting about it, or doing something else. We are beginning to live in a state of fear, and this is fucking with our own heads.

There is no “enemy”. Not yet. yes, I’ve grepped these out from one of my favorite websites, but they all ring true. This is not 1984, so why in hell do our police force look like something from Judge Dread? We’re not in a situation where we are completely doomed, so why are our freedoms and liberties being repressed. I can now be arrested for the knowledge in my head, whether I intend to do something with it or not! Thats thought crime people and it’s fundamentally fucked up.

“The more restrictions and prohibitions in the world, the poorer people get.”- Lao Tzu

“The only freedom which deserves the name, is that of pursuing our own good in our own way, so long as we do not attempt to deprive others of theirs, or impede their efforts to obtain it.”
- John Stuart Mill, “On Liberty” (1859)

“If we were to wake up some morning and find that everyone was the same race, creed and color, we would find some other cause for prejudice by noon.”
- George Aiken

“Censorship reflects society’s lack of confidence in itself. It is a hallmark of an authoritarian regime.”
- Justice Potter Stewart, US Supreme Court

“The more corrupt the state, the more numerous the laws.”
- Tacitus

“Take away the right to say ‘fuck’ and you take away the right to say “fuck the government. ” ”
- Lenny Bruce

“Wherever they burn books, they will also, in the end, burn people.”
- Ralph Waldo Emerson

“Just as iron rusts from disuse, even so does inaction spoil the intellect.”
- Leonardo Da Vinci

“Trust not him that hath once broken faith; he who betrayed thee once, will betray thee again.”
- Shakespeare

“There’s no way to rule innocent men. The only power government has is the power to crack down on criminals. Well, when there aren’t enough criminals, one makes them. One declares so many things to be a crime that it becomes impossible for men to live without breaking laws.”
- Ayn Rand

So much to see, so much to do

Posted in randomosity at 12:00 am by coldclimate

Well, after a busy weekend, I’ve had a pretty busy week thus far. Last night I get to see The Prodigy live (only a single photo from the night, of me). So tired and bruided this morning its unreal.

Tonight: a quiet evening of making my stereo work via a webfront end (she works! Will do a quicky public release asap), and washing (dull dull dullness). I did write a huge rant about the governemnt and a few other bits and peices, but then hit the wrong keys and closed the window - damn it. Shall reproduce later.
