So so hot in the city

Posted in nyc at 7:27 pm by coldclimate

OK - today is official our last day in NYC, and for the last 5 days it has been hot.  Very hot.  Super dngously hot.  I’ve even got a tan.

Shame about the total lack of internet whilst we were here, otherwise I ouwld have been blogging and flickring and trustedplaces’ing as we went, however, it was not to be.  I’ve taken a stack of photos however, and have all my various recipts so I can write up places as over the next few weeks when I get back.

Unfortunately my stomach has turned against me, and is rebelling.  This is not a good way to start a day that will culminate in an 8 hour flight.  It might be last nights numerous rounds of frozen margaritas that did it, at least, that what I’m going to blame.

Food Tour!

Posted in nyc at 8:06 pm by coldclimate

Yesteay was a really great day.  We booked onto a food tour round Greenwich village, which is, should I evebe given the chance where I would live in New York.  Crazy three and a half hours, with a rambling gentlemen who know somebody on every round.  So much more to tell, so little internet to steal (this time from a brilliant Mexican place I’ll review later).

Here - but limited internet!

Posted in nyc at 8:25 pm by coldclimate

Would you Adam it - The apartment hasn’t got internet access! Still, we got here ok, made it into town, the apartment rocks (photos to come, it’s stunning), went out to dinner (Pucunnis - teeny tiny place with no booze license so you bring your own - great food), and crashed.

Sunday we thundered all over Manhatten, up and down, through the food fair on 9th avenue, I ate a whole brisket, and the girl had a pina colada that clearly was booze free.  That evening we drank frozen maragaritas at the place round the corner from the apartment, and all was well.

Today - MoMA, and queueing for Avenue Q tickets, and sitting in the park stealing wireless.  Hopefully shall use trustedplaces to find us dinner tonight.

NYC - half a world away

Posted in nyc at 8:05 pm by coldclimate

OK, tomorrow, the big trip is all kicking off on Saturday.  The girl is on her way down tomorrow, I shall have finished my course, and after a good nights sleep, we’re off to the airport.

The amazing news is that there are 48 places in NYC reviewed on trustedplaces.com as of this evening!  Thats double what there were last week, and four times as many places as when I first got in touch.

I’ve also had a good few recommendations from Paul who owns the flat we’re staying in, and Big O, my old flatmate.

Wii + Starwars

My old flatmate has just pointed out that if they ever made a Starwars Wii game, give lightsabre duals, it would be… AMAZING!

I love the name, and also the weekly cocktails, how have I only just discovered /food.com.

Maybe it is the /. effect, maybe I should actually write it slashfood instead?

Homefab in sugar

This is just incredible. At the moment fabrication machines (aka. 3d printers) cost the Earth (and an arm, and a leg), but evilmadscientistLabs have homebrewed one that runs on…sugar! Caramelising it into 3d models! Amazing!

The evils of a big company

Posted in randomosity at 12:45 pm by coldclimate

after discussing how evil large companies are (or can be) over beers last night wth a friend who ditched PWC to become a doctor, I was shocked and appauled at the following article about selling practices at Best Buy in the US.

The actions described are purely criminal.

Management Econ 101

Posted in ideas at 12:38 pm by coldclimate

Joel on software has a brilliant article about how you pay people affects how they work and how they are motivated. Brilliant stuff, well worth reading. You have to get over the hump of “if I pay you for something that will make you do it better”, but once you do, its an excellent primer on management. It ties nicely with Freakonomics too.

Exotic meat - kangaroo

Posted in food at 7:25 pm by coldclimate

OK, so tonight was the first of my exotic meats from osgrow.  I had two (little) kangaroo steaks, cooked quickly in a hot frying pan.  The larger one I split in half so all three pieces were the same thickness.  It cooked quickly, going from a dark meat to a dark brown in 3 or 4 minutes.  I ended up stuffing two pieces into pitta breads with salad and some creme fresh, and having one piece on its own plain.

And the verdict - well, basically it’s a bit like a livery beef.  Possibly not as meaty as venison, but very pleasent all the same.  I’m not a huge liver fan, but it was good all the same.  The texture was not as tough as a piece of beef of the same size and cooking time, and it was extreamly juicey.  I finished cooking out on my plate as I ate through the pittas, initally running red, but settling quite quickly.

All in all - I’d go for it again, though it doesn’t stand out above good beef or venison though.

Visulising last.fm data

Posted in interweb, music, technology at 3:16 pm by coldclimate

I lvoe the last.fm service, even if I did just have to reset my user because it was full of chode, but it’s visualisions of data are poor. This page about visulising last.fm data is super cool however. I love the interactive graphs!

Only show unread emails in gmail

Posted in interweb, technology at 10:58 am by coldclimate

I do like gmail, but it takes a bit of getting used to. It would be really handy to be able to order the inbox by the user who emailed you, but the best thing I’ve found at the moment is to put “is:unread” in the search box and low and behold, only unread emails will be shown!

Magic.

I’m not a huge HP LOvecraft fan (in fact I’m pretty sure I’ve not read anything y him infact), however - you can’t help adorring My Little Cthulhu.

You have to love Mae West, not only for being a complete sex bomb, but also for some fabulous quotes.

Using Classical art to improve your own photos

Posted in randomosity, technology at 9:13 am by coldclimate

This is a pure stroke of genius - by using Photoshops “match colour” service, and picking an appropriate classical painting, you can adjust the colourings of your photos to make them more impressive!

Lateral thinking in action.

NYC here we come

Posted in blog, nyc at 11:53 pm by coldclimate

Right - now at the end of this month I and theGirl will be heading to New York for nearly two weeks. I’m hoping to make use of my new found interweb project TrustedPlaces (have I told you to go join, review and enjoy? No? Then go! Now! Review! Enjoy! More!). The plan is that hopefully TP memebers will recommend places in NYC (TP is very Londoncentric at the moment, but it will happily handle most other cities as far as I can tell), and then I and theGirl will visit places. I’m hoping to blog most of it onto here too, hence the new catagory of this post - NYC. In theory this means going to http://www.coldclimate.co.uk/category/nyc/ will then show up all NYC related posts.

There should hopefully be some Flickr goodness, and possibly some GPS mashup stuff too (if I get my DG100 working with the Mac)
